# Pre-fill an Image field with a default image

Load an image once in the form builder, and every new submission opens with it already in the Image field, ready to annotate.

**Published on October 14, 2026**

**Improvement: an Image field can now start with a default image.**

Some field processes always work on the same picture: a vehicle diagram for a condition report, a floor plan for snagging, a body outline for an injury report. Until now, users had to find that picture in their device gallery and add it to the field in every new submission, which was slow and error-prone.

You can now load that picture once, in the form builder. Every new submission then opens with the image already in the Image field, on the web and on mobile, so field users can go straight to drawing on it. They can still replace or remove it if a submission needs a different picture.

**1. Add the image in the field properties.** Open the form in the builder, select the Image field, and drop your picture into the **Default value** zone of its properties panel, or click the zone to browse for it. A thumbnail and the file name confirm the upload.

**2. Activate the form.** Once the new version of the form is active, each new submission is created with the image pre-filled, on the web and on mobile.

**3. Annotate in the field.** Users open a new submission and draw on the image directly, without leaving the form to look for it.

**What you can upload.** One image per Image field, in JPEG, PNG, GIF or TIFF format, up to 20 MB. If the file is too large or in the wrong format, an error message tells you why and your form stays as it was.

**Existing submissions are not affected.** The default image only applies to submissions created after the form is activated. If you later remove the image from the field properties, submissions that already contain it keep it; only new submissions start empty again.

Available on: **Web**, **Mobile**

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://www.center.daxium-air.com/news/october-2026/image-field-default-image.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
