# PDF Plan view

Place the child submissions of a relation field as pins on a PDF plan.

The PDF plan view displays the child submissions of a [relation](/user-documentation/components-concepts-terminology.md#relation) field as pins on a plan: a floor plan, a site map, an installation diagram. Instead of scrolling through a list, field users find each item where it physically is, and add new ones by tapping the right spot.

Typical uses include building inspections, snag lists, equipment maintenance and site visits: any work where information is tied to a physical location.

## Before you start

The PDF plan view is enabled in the settings of the relation field, with the **Plan view** option (see [Relations](/user-documentation/build/building-forms/fields/relations.md)). The option is only available when:

* the **Creation** option is ticked on the field, and
* the **Countable relation** option is not selected.

Once enabled, the plans replace the usual display of the field: child submissions are reached only through the plans.

## Adding a plan

### Mobile

In the [submission](/user-documentation/components-concepts-terminology.md#submission) on the mobile, the relation field shows a single button:

* **Add a plan** when the field has no plan yet.
* **See plan(s)** once at least one plan is attached.

Adding a plan opens the list of **recently used plans**: every plan already used on the device, in any form, most recent first. Use the search bar to find one, then tap it to attach it. Only the document itself is copied: pins and drawings from other submissions are not.

To add a new plan, choose one of the following:

* **Take a photo:** Photograph a paper plan. The photo is converted to a PDF automatically.
* **Choose a plan:** pick a PDF file from the device.

### Web

You can also create submissions with existing plans from the web, and assign those submissions to your teams on the field.

On the web platform, the relation field has a third chip for the plan view, which is displayed by default.

<figure><img src="https://2070467688-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhifC5lkPdiB9lhTGThXK%2Fuploads%2FPVDGvnr39IACjVJ0B4re%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=0a9c3e0e-6537-421a-bb51-4b5c13468319" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can add a plan by clicking on the + button on the right side of the field.

<figure><img src="https://2070467688-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhifC5lkPdiB9lhTGThXK%2Fuploads%2FGZMJh2zzW2d9LBa3VR0O%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=bbbcd6ae-fc3d-40b8-86e5-2fec49058aab" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can then drop your plan or browse it on your computer. The supported formats are jpeg, png, gif, tiff, pdf. The maximum file size is **80 MB**.

<figure><img src="https://2070467688-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhifC5lkPdiB9lhTGThXK%2Fuploads%2Far90c5lo69mP9Cr6XlNr%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=70798bca-3e92-4e6a-8648-d8dfd116968d" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The interface will then ask you to give a name to your plan.

<figure><img src="https://2070467688-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhifC5lkPdiB9lhTGThXK%2Fuploads%2F0rIG1Y30e0K4U6IeIyQq%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=da7829a8-0864-4e9f-a8cc-cdef413a9efe" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

After this step, you will be able to see your plan in a PDF viewer. More details about this viewer will be provided in the sections below.

<figure><img src="https://2070467688-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhifC5lkPdiB9lhTGThXK%2Fuploads%2F8lV4G0PzcA9LqWG4Awx5%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=c9c671c3-f31d-4949-b468-2f29eb7979c3" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Working with several plans (not available yet)

{% hint style="warning" %}
This option is still under development.
{% endhint %}

A relation field can hold several plans, for example one per floor of a building. **See plan(s)** opens the list of attached plans, each shown with its name and a preview of its first page.

* Tap a plan to open it.
* Use the button at the bottom of the list to add another plan.
* Tap the cross on a plan to remove it. After confirmation, its pins are removed, but the child submissions they pointed to are not deleted.

## Viewing a plan

### Mobile

A plan always opens in read-only mode. Zoom and pan freely: the pins stay anchored to their spot.

Tap a pin linked to a child submission to see its preview, then tap the preview to open the child submission in read-only mode.

## Placing pins and linking submissions

### Mobile

Tap the pencil icon to switch to edit mode. The icon only appears if you are allowed to edit the field. The toolbar offers:

* a position pin
* freehand drawing
* image
* line
* ellipse
* undo and redo

Once you have placed an element on the plan, tap it to move or resize it. You can also copy, crop or leave a simple comment (in the form of text, not in a child submission).

To link a pin (or any other element drawn on the plan) to a child submission, select it and tap **Attach a submission**, then either:

* **pick an existing child submission** (if the "Selection" mode is configured on the relation), using search and filters to find it, or
* **create a new child submission**: it is linked to the pin automatically. If you cancel the creation, the pin stays on the plan, unlinked.

{% endtabs %}

Good to know:

* A pin is linked to one child submission at a time.
* The same child submission can be linked to several pins, including on different plans of the same relation field.
* To link a pin to another child submission, first detach the current one with the cross, then attach the new one.
* Moving a pin keeps its link. Duplicating a pin creates an unlinked copy.
* If the relation field allows only one child submission, all the pins of the field must point to that same submission.

### Web

On the web, when editing a submission you'll find two tabs on the PDF component: **Annotate** and **Shape**.

<figure><img src="https://2070467688-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhifC5lkPdiB9lhTGThXK%2Fuploads%2FYp7Xv8RrZN5M2arOEc8N%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=1062e837-ee4f-438a-a822-a89de2da1d1d" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

As on the mobile, once you add a shape, a menu attached to it appears. Its icons let you:

* create a new submission
* link an existing submission
* open the PDF comments side panel
* open the customization options of the shape
* add a link to the shape (URL)
* delete the shape

<figure><img src="https://2070467688-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhifC5lkPdiB9lhTGThXK%2Fuploads%2FbidwDTmDXEk89SmTlZrd%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=79aa18f2-bad0-44ca-9599-2762d2dba1bb" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Offline use and synchronization

The PDF plan view works fully offline. Plans, pins and removals are sent when the submission is sent. Once synchronized, they are visible on the other devices and on the web back-office.

## Plans in reports

A plan can be inserted as an image in a [report](/user-documentation/components-concepts-terminology.md#report): either the full plan, or a close-up centered on one pin, with the zoom level of your choice. See [Report templates](/user-documentation/build/building-the-reporting/report-templates.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://www.center.daxium-air.com/user-documentation/use/views/views-in-relations/pdf-plan-view.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
